A truly incredible looking abandoned pachinko parlour

This truly incredible looking abandoned pachinko parlour is a place I’ve wanted to photograph since late last year, but overcast conditions were a key requirement, along with a little bit of greenery for extra colour. There was also the added necessity of waking up ready and willing to tackle a long train journey and an even longer walk. All of which finally came to fruition last week.

The trek, it turned out, was even further than anticipated, but the pachinko parlour did not disappoint. Quite the opposite in fact. It really was a sight to behold. The 28km loop to and from the train station, on the other hand, didn’t provide a whole lot of other photographic opportunities, but I did take a few pictures — most of which I’ve included here, as they were part of the day, and in many ways work well, providing something of a wider context in regards the surrounding area.

Daily scenes from local Tokyo meanders

Wandering Tokyo with a camera always feels worthwhile, as do the brief sights and encounters of local daily life, so these are some such moments taken during a couple of my recent Tokyo photowalk tours.

The disappearance of a dark and abandoned old Tokyo house

An old and abandoned house like this is a rare find to say the least in Tokyo, especially so with its vast array of personal items — the sheer scale of which made trying to document them almost dizzying. Added to that were the dark and mostly cramped conditions, creating further challenges. Elements that needless to say didn’t make it any less interesting. Quite the opposite in fact. A location that without a doubt was like no other, and one most definitely tinged with an air of genuine melancholy.

It was hard to try and piece together how many people called it home over the years, but it was undoubtedly a house that held a multitude of memories from multiple generations. Remembrances only truly meaningful to those connected with them, and yet they still lived on in a way in the rooms they belonged to. Now though they have disappeared forever, as just like many of those in the photos, the house no longer exists.

A saunter round the north side of Tokyo

These are the people and places encountered on an afternoon stroll round the north side of Tokyo last week. Scenes that in many ways worked out like a sort of unplanned amalgamation of my recent posts and outings.

On a different note, my photography work is currently making two posts a week difficult to manage, so for the time being I’ll reduce my updates to every Tuesday. A change that’ll help me balance my freelance commitments and also keep those weekly posts at the level I would like them to be.

The wonderful variety of Tokyo wanders

There are many wonderful things about wandering Tokyo with a camera, but the consistency with which the city conjures up surprises is definitely one of the highlights. Unexpected moments and meetings that can not only make a day, but all being well, make for some decent photos too.

These then are a few of those encounters, along with several far more ordinary scenes. All of them taken on two of my photowalk tours over the past week.
