Fashion frivolity

Despite not being as significant as the highly respected ‘Best Jeanist’ awards, the ‘Best Leathernist’ competition is nevertheless not to be, erm, sniffed at.

Amazingly celebrating its sixth year in existence, the event’s organiser was delighted to announce Eriko Sato as the 2006 leather-clad champion; the 24-year-old actress taking over from the previous winner, Anna Tsuchiya.

Now quite what constitutes a good ‘leathernist’ apart from the wearing of animal skin isn’t exactly clear, but after extensive research it appears that Sato-san’s shiny black boots may well have clinched the deal.

With the addition of this rather cheeky little number doing her bid no harm whatsoever.

Admittedly none of which may actually be made of leather, but that, it has to be said, is about as relevant as the contest itself — and indeed this post.

Bag balls-up

Stepping out in public without a bag of some kind or another — and ideally one bearing the name of a major European brand — would appear to be a sin of sorts for the majority of Tokyo residents; however for any scatterbrained shoppers forlornly finding themselves without a suitable carrying device, help is, for want of a better description, finally at hand.

bags galore

For a small fee, this dedicated department store offers the patterned and very passable paper bags pictured above. Yet whilst helping fend off an unforgivable fashion faux pas, it’s not immediately obvious how new the bags actually are.

Decomposable duds

Textile pioneer Unitika Ltd unveiled its latest clothing line in Tokyo on Monday — the new range of raiment made of a corn-based eco-friendly fabric, allowing it to naturally decompose.

The likes of swimsuits and skimpy skirts however do open the product to comments along the lines of “it looks good enough to eat”; however readers can rest assured that such corn-related crassness has no place on these pages.

Such a worthy and worthwhile invention demands nothing but the utmost respect, and one can only marvel over how long it would take for the garments featured in Unitika’s upcoming November calendar to completely disappear.

Caledonian cosplay

The word ‘cosplay’ generally conjures images of young anime or game lovers decked out in a myriad of bizarre and colourful costumes; however for those with interests far away from such fantasyland folly, there are still options to don an elaborate costume now and again to briefly escape the confines of the real world.

Take the Japan Scottish Highland Games for example (warning, link contains a brief burst of bagpipe music) — an event best known for burly blokes tossing their cabers, yet at the same time, for fans of all things Scottish, it offers the perfect opportunity for a spot of cultural costume play. The young fella pictured below even going to the trouble of perfecting his paunch to do the role real justice.

Cosplay contenders

With time rapidly running out for September’s hotly contested ‘Cosplay Popularity Vote’, rumours are rife concerning who will be crowned Tokyo’s king of cosplay cool.

Could it possibly be saucy number 77 for being bravely pictured in her panties?

Or even cheeky number 95 for having the gall to try and get away with simply donning a pair of specs and a large sweatband?

Then again, number 106 could sneak it with his bizarre predilection for drinking what appears to be mayonnaise.

All in all making it a contest way too close to call, and with the tension mounting as the end of the month draws near, a nation awaits with baited breath.
