Pearls aplenty

Aimed to coincide with Monday’s Coming-of-age Day, actress Satomi Ishihara has been named ‘Best Pearl Dresser’ among 20-year-olds for 2007. An award in no way designed to blatantly promote a product, but instead to celebrate the beauty of Japanese youth.

Not only that, but the prestigious prize it seems has already boosted Ishihara-san’s popularity, with a long line of fans frantically fumbling for their fit to burst wallets and offering to give the young actress as many pearl necklaces as she wants.

Or something along those lines.

Tobacco-based titillation

After years — back in the days when it was still allowed — of sponsoring far from sexy sports such as darts and snooker, the news that Japan Tobacco may be about to take over Gallaher, the maker of Benson and Hedges cigarettes, has sent share prices soaring — many investors hoping that the Japanese company will add a touch of titillation to tobacco.

However, even if the deal does go through, insiders claim that the hugely popular itsy bitsy baccy bra will almost certainly not see a European release.

F*ing fashion

Yesterday saw models Yuri Ebihara and Moe Oshikiri debut their new line of hosiery, with the pair rather unusually opting for a chapel in Tokyo’s Aoyama district as the venue; an unorthodox approach further evident in their brand name — f*ing motesto.

At the event, the two celebrities modelled some of their new range and happily answered a barrage of questions from the press, with Ebihara-san in particular confessing how happy she was.

The 27-year-old saying that she hopes the label will become so successful that when people see her, they’ll immediately think of f*ing.

Farming fashion

With the Japanese being such feverish followers of fashion, it’s not surprising that even tradesman are picky about their appearance, with puffed-out Hammer-esque pants and fancy footwear very much the order of the day.

A sense of style that has now also reached the formerly frumpy world of farming, with the Japan Knitwear Designers Association (JAKDA) attempting to halt a declining interest in agriculture by establishing ‘agrifashion‘, somewhat optimistically hoping that it “will help promote farming not only as a worthwhile occupation, but also a cool and trendy one.”

The winning designs at the Tokyo event however appear to suggest that they still have some way to go.

Although that said, 70-year-old style guru and seeding specialist Junko Suzuki appeared to be quite impressed — the bonnets in particular getting plenty of praise.

Her only reservation being the flaunting of what she considered to be just a little too much flesh.

Nail nonsense

For Japanese singer Kumi Koda, these are heady days indeed, as after already bagging this year’s much coveted Best Jeanist award, the Kyoto born star has now been named a Nail Queen.

The prize — perhaps unsurprisingly sponsored by the Japan Nailist Association — honours those deemed to have reached the pinnacle in finger-related fashion. And, as the picture below amply proves, the 24-year-old does indeed have a lovely set.

Other winners included the equally famous but far less photogenic Akiko Wada; plus, somewhat surprisingly, an Italian bloke.
