Bearing ban

Slowly but surely Japan is adopting tougher measures to combat smoking, with tobacco related bylaws restricting where people can or can’t smoke, plus also dealing with issues such as the throwing away of cigarette butts.

That said, the emphasis is still very much ‘manner’ related, with how (rather than if) you smoke being priority number one.

With this in mind, the district where the picture below was taken clearly points out that smoking is allowed; however doing so in an elaborate and/or aloof manner is strictly forbidden.

Samaritans sucked in

”Make money by dating quality women”

Part of an advertisement campaign for a job aimed at men with a few spare evenings free.

Now call me cynical, untrusting even, but an ad like that would make me a little cautious to say the least, especially as it went on to boast, “Dating with rich, quality women is your job.” Yet amazingly around 10,000 men applied, happily coughing up over 30,000 yen (150 pound) each in application and introduction fees — which could arguably be viewed as a rather odd procedure, considering the supposed wealth of the women they’d soon be dating. Still, with earnings of 30,000 yen for a few hours out on a date, or up to 70,000 for taking the trouble of spending the whole night with the lucky lady, they’d soon get their money back. Plus more on top, so to speak.

And so they all promptly paid up, netting the four companies running the scheme over 300 million yen (1.5m pound). Yet none of the men got a single date with a woman of any quality, as it was all a big scam. Can you believe that? By being sent pictures of prospective ‘dates’ which were either shots of the female phone operators hired by the fraudsters, or cut from magazines like this one,

a quality woman

the men’s minds were obviously clouded by their desire to help out these wealthy and well balanced women; who due to reasons unknown felt the need to pay out large sums of money to date — and possibly sleep with — random strangers.

And to think that these sympathetic salary men were conned by unscrupulous individuals intent on benefiting from such benevolence; the chief perpetrator apparently being 49-year-old Noriyuki Sato, who has thankfully been arrested for fraud.

Cabbages and confession

With husbands doing next to nothing around the house, and making even less effort in the bedroom, things aren’t looking especially rosy in the relationship realm. But whilst this may paint a decidedly grim picture of marriage in Japan, and an even worse one of the nation’s menfolk, it’s not all doom and gloom — at least not if you visit the village of Tsumagoi in Gunma Prefecture; a spot where a 4th Century emperor is said to have unashamedly sobbed following the death of his wife who had sacrificed her life for his worthy well-being.

Whilst now more famous for its cabbages than monarchial mourning, the name of the village translates as ‘wife love’, making it the perfect spot for members of the Nihon Aisaika Kyokai — or the Japan Wife Lovers Association. As come September 9th, the gang of mostly middle-aged men will stand amongst the cabbages of Tsumagoi and shout about the love they feel for their wives.

no cabbages

Chief shouter and head of the group, Kiyotaka Yamada, explained his shameless bouts of bawling by saying, “I just wanted to tell as many people as possible about what a wonderful marriage I was enjoying. I wanted to be able to give courage to men who want to thank their wives but are too embarrassed to do so.” A laudable theme it has to be said, and one he wants to develop beyond the confines of his organisation by the introduction of ‘Love Your Wife Day’ on January 31st — a bold (and some would say overly ambitious) venture that urges salary men the length and breadth of the country to briefly cast off the shackles of their company. “We want people to go home from work early on that day at least and say ‘Thank you’ to their wives.”

Yamada-san hopes that these initially small steps will eventually lead to not only better relations, but also a better image of Japan throughout the rest of the world. “Overseas, Japan tends to be seen as a chauvinistic country. We want to improve the image of Japanese men overall by carrying out public displays of affection for our wives. For Baby Boomers such as myself, saying that you love your wife is akin to admitting that you’re totally hen-pecked. But, I’d really like to see as many guys as possible head up here on September 9th and shout their lungs out no matter how much of a fool they feel.”

Turn-out is expected to be low.

Elderly economics

With convenience store chain am/pm already blazing a trail in the niche customer stakes with its fella-free store in the country’s capital, competitor Lawson Inc. has decided to enter the fray with a couple of shops aimed solely at the aged.

elderly entertainment

In a bid to attract their desired clientele, the two trial stores have wider than usual aisles to accommodate shopping carts; and the shelves are stocked with traditional sweets, local specialties and other products popular with the elderly — whatever they may be. Each outlet also boasts a rest area equipped with tables, massage chairs and a television, with the latter presumably set to a suitably deafening volume.

However rumours of impromptu games of bingo amongst regulars, and the inclusion of a mattress-cum-bank for customers to store their life savings under, have yet to be confirmed.

Brace yourself

There are a plethora of pitiable award ceremonies in Japan, with those for the best leathernist, best jeanist and nail queen immediately springing to mind. Yet even such shameless product promotions passed off as prizes pale into insignificance in the credibility stakes when compared to the recent Beautiful E-line Award — an honour bestowed upon a (preferably pretty) young lady judged to have best promoted the importance of orthodontics. The accolade funded, funnily enough, by the Japan Association of Adult Orthodontics.

This year’s proud winner being 20-year-old actress and current flavour of the month, Aya Ueto.
