Nasty neighbour

A woman was arrested earlier this week in Nara for persistently harassing one of her neighbours.

Natsuko Mitsuyama, a 31-year-old housewife, has been charged with inflicting bodily harm on an unnamed 30-year-old woman who lives in the same apartment building.

As well as the alleged physical assault, Ms Mitsuyama conducted a deranged and determined mental campaign against her neighbour. She repeatedly followed her victim to and from work, and made thousands of phone calls (sometimes more than one hundred a day) to her office. Many of these were abusive, including some to the poor woman’s colleagues suggesting (in no uncertain terms) that she should be fired.

Not surprisingly, being subjected to this mental and physical attack resulted in the unfortunate woman suffering from depression, insomnia, and headaches. But whilst our sympathy lies with the victim, there’s the issue of what she did to warrant such a persistent and perverse campaign.

Was she hosting repeated late-night parties? Playing loud music at all hours of the day and night? Or even bringing undesirable types back to the apartment building?

No, it seems that she once had the temerity to ignore one of her tormentor’s good wishes. “It all started because she ignored my greeting” the maniacal Mitsuyama told the police, before admitting to making harassing phone calls but denying the other allegations against her.

All I can say is that it’s a good job she doesn’t live in Tokyo. I’m lucky if my neighbours can be bothered to glance in my general direction, let alone make the effort of uttering a polite greeting.

Spectral storage

Fresh from its success with the colourful and cute SushiDisk, Japanese company SolidAlliance has just released the GhostRadar.

usb ghost radar

This rather bizarre looking contraption contains a USB memory stick, and as its name suggests, a ghost detector too. Company Vice President Yuchiro Saito says the device is suited for spooky late nights alone at your computer.

In a place that’s haunted the GhostRadar can be expected to beep every hour or so. But in other places it will rather disappointingly fall completely silent.

And in a desperate attempt to add interest and intrigue, Saito-san went on to say that the GhostRadar “detects invisible phenomena and so the system is confidential. This is not a game. This is a measuring device.”

But at a staggering 19,800 yen (100 pound) for 512 megabytes, it bloody well should be.

And, with images as mind boggling as this, there is no need whatsoever for any pet related pun.

Prophetic porridge

Sunday’s earthquake in southern Japan once again proved that scientific attempts at predicting tremors are ineffectual at best. Especially as the area hit was considered (relatively) safe.

It turns out however that a ritual at a 1,200-year-old Shinto shrine in Miyaki may have predicted the quake five days before it struck. But don’t for a minute think that the ceremony involved the perusal of old calendars and ancient texts to decipher the future. No, all that was used was a humble bowl of rice porridge.

On February 26th a bowl of porridge was placed in front of an altar, and then on March 15th it was removed for a fortune teller to examine it and make his predictions. The results were then passed on to the local religious man who broadcast the news on local television.

Priest Masahiro Higashi said, “It was good porridge this year with a shiny surface and not much mould, but I saw a rare crack.” And after rambling on about harvests and other such stuff, he added prophetically, “But be careful and be prepared for earthquakes.”

So there you go.

Lavatory literature

Whether the unusual nature of this publication is in relation to its literary worth hasn’t been disclosed, but Sanseido Books is selling a summary of the Architectural Body by Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins on toilet paper.

toilet paper book

For any bathroom tissue aficionados out there, each roll is 30-metres long, and thankfully double-layered. However cost wise this toilet tract doesn’t come cheap, as each roll retails at 350 yen (almost 2 pound). But for the combination of reading matter, and the, erm, ability to remove matter, it’s arguably not a bad price.
