Mills & Manga

The violent and sexually explicit world of manga, and the romantic idyll of Mills & Boon would appear strange bedfellows. But despite their different backgrounds, they’ve decided to get it on. As under the banner of their Canadian parent company Harlequin, Mills & Boon novels have been published in a manga format.

As well as sci-fi, gangster, and pornographic genres, manga has an extensive romantic collection. And it’s here where Mills & Boon is trying to make inroads. The company has had to accept that the younger generation is less willing to read novels, and manga is the obvious answer.

But changes had to be made. Not only in the stories, but in the looks of the relevant characters too. The decidedly different covers for Lucy Gordon’s (apparently) very popular The Sheikh’s Reward shows two distinct approaches.

But subtle story changes and big-eyed characters may not be enough to sway many Japanese readers. If Mills & boon is to really crack the Japanese manga market, it might have to significantly ratchet up the raunch factor. Japanese women it seems like their romantic manga to contain explicit sex scenes, and perhaps more worrying for the publishers, love stories between men. So could the Sheikh’s reward turn out to be something very different from what he expected?

Now if Mills and Boon do make such story concessions to please the Japanese market, and it proves to be popular, would the company consider publishing the re-written novels in Britain (or indeed anywhere else in the world)? It would certainly be interesting to see the reaction of all those little old ladies who systematically plough their way through the extensive Mills and Boon catalogue.

Judge generous

In a rare case of somebody walking away scot-free from a Japanese court, a 32 year old man was found not guilty of groping a schoolgirl on a busy train last year.

Judge Toshiro Fujii didn’t dispute the schoolgirl’s claim, nor the fact that the accused man had moved in the packed train, but found no direct proof that the man on trial was the actual groper. In his final ruling, Judge Fujii said, “The possibility of a third party being involved cannot be denied.”

The accused had refuted any wrongdoing from the moment of his arrest, claiming that he was simply trying to free his coat, which had been trapped when the carriage doors closed. How convincing this sounds is certainly open to debate, but for somebody to walk away free from a Japanese court is a news worthy event indeed. With the nation’s incredibly high conviction rate, the man in question must be very touched by the Judge’s generosity.

Sorry.

Buttock botherer

Last week, the Singapore district court fined a Japanese sales executive 4,500 Singapore dollars for molesting two flight attendants on a trip from Seoul to Singapore.

Tomonori Daimon was found guilty of squeezing the buttocks of one flight attendant, and placing his hands on the hips of another. Whist pleading guilty to the charges, and admitting to being a little drunk, Mr. Daimon claimed that there was nothing untoward in his actions, as a quick squeeze of the buttocks was his way of a friendly greeting.

All I can say is that I’m glad I don’t work in the same office as the overly tactile Tomonori.

Above is a gratuitous picture of a couple of young ladies (who just happen to be wearing bikinis) enthusiastically demonstrating the Daimon-san form of greeting yesterday.

Perverted practitioner

At the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Doctor Norihito Yamauchi wasn’t content with mere urine samples from his patients. As judging by the deviant doctor’s behaviour, he also wanted to see the samples actually being produced.

To achieve this, Mr. Yamauchi installed a small a camera in the toilet trashcan. But however careful he might have been, he didn’t do a good enough job, as a female student spotted it. Resulting in Yamauchi-san making a full (and no doubt incredibly embarrassing) confession.

In his defence, the good doctor can claim he pursued a non-discriminatory policy, as it turns out the toilet was used by both sexes. However it is hard to see this making any difference in a court of law. More likely the judge will just be relieved to get the case over and done with.

Watch out there’s a chikan about

On this site you’ll find plenty of posts regarding perverts (chikan) and the lengths they’ll go to get a glimpse of underwear, a crafty feel, or just a bit of old fashioned voyerism.

But it seems that people are fighting back, and kids are being warned to be on their guard from a very young age. Here’s a notice I found outside an elementary school I visited yesterday.

As unsettling as the picture is, what’s perhaps more disturbing is that the hands look uncannily like those belonging to Mr. Burns of The Simpsons fame.
