Mildly amusing Japanese-English #8

Dutch wife

For reasons unknown, a blow up doll in Japan is called a dutch wife. There probably is a simple explanation for such an unusual name, but I think I’d prefer not to know. That way it’s more intriguing, and also funnier. Unless you happen to be a real Dutch wife I suppose.

But in technology driven Japan, dutch wives are not freakish looking inflatable monsters. Instead they are silicone-molded beauties, that apparently have a texture very similar to real skin and are completely seam free. These state of the art dutch wives do come at a price though. The latest Jewel model will set you back a libido quelling 600,000 yen (3,000 pound).

For anybody in the market for a dutch wife, here’s what you can expect for your money.

And as you can see from these pictures, you can take your bride out on a date, or even to the beach.

Orient Industry who make these companions offer a lifelong after-service, and anticipate a time when the doll will outlive its owner. But for any unwanted dutch wives, the company will discreetly take them back free of charge. And rather than just throw them away, twice a year it has a Buddhist memorial service, where the ‘souls’ of the dolls are consecrated.

I think you mean “kami” Lee. I’ve done a memorial service for my sisters dolls when they died. I don’t think it’s that strange…

Yeah, that’s a fair point Ted. I wasn’t going to put that bit in, but my idea was to try and show how much more than just regular blow up dolls these are.

Obviously they are just by the price tag alone, but they seem to be marketed with a big emphasis on the companion aspect. By including the last bit I was trying to get that point across.

I’d have been better of just saying instead eh? Well, at least I have now!

True. I’m not saying theres anything wrong with the last bit. I just thought i’d share that with you.

You really must post a pearson’s sucses story with one of the “Duth Dolls” I’m sure it would be… “inspirational”

Hmm, I don’t know. The first time I saw those pictures of the “wives” I found them a bit disturbing to be honest. Especially the picture on the hompepage which has them all standing about fully clothed in the showroom.

Perhpas these pictures are enough. I’m not sure I want to hear about any “marital” activity!!

I may be completely wrong about this, but I wonder if the “Dutch” refers at all to the girls and women (not just Dutch, though they are most prominently recalled along with Koreans) drawn from captured areas and existing colonies, enslaved during WWII to ‘service’ the Japanese Army? If this is the case, it’s probably one of the most offensive euphemisms yet heard.

It never occurred to me that there might be a kami of sex dolls. So, there are spirits all around in all objects? Or is it something that’s particular to objects that people have interactions with regularly?

Both concept are not very hard to understand:
    1. Dutch Wife orginal means an open frame constructed in cane which help you cool down in bed during hot summer night. I guess the doll will do the same thing …:-)

    2. The “passaway” service you talk about orginal started in Shinto. Technically speaking it apply to all household items (not just the doll). The idea was that an item will trun to a demon if left alone for a LONG time.

According to my better half, such services are generally restricted to dolls (which it seems also includes the “adult” variety), as they are considered to have souls.

But as invaderzim says, it can apply to other household items. Although such services I’m guessing are nowhere near as common.

dutch wives are one thing, but have you heared of japan’s so called “photogenic dolls”? basically the same concept, a molded silicon doll, but are made to appeal to the japanese lolita fetishist with the faces and body proportions of children. i can’t read much japanese so i don’t know if they are.. eer.. anatomically correct, but they’re still pretty disturbing. the suggestive clothes and poses they photograph them in doesn’t help.

Ya know, for a sex doll, I seem able to find pictures of every part except where it counts. I hate to sound so disgusting, but does anyone have a picture of between the legs of Candy Girl Jewel?

Dutch Wife may be derived from… “A long body-length pillow that can be held or wrapped around one’s body while sleeping. The origin of the term is thought to be from the Dutch colony of Indonesia where Dutch traders would spend long periods away from their wives.” – The Japanese occupied Indonesia from 1942 – 1945.
