Japanese drinks #8: Yummy Pepsi yoghurt?

When it comes to japan-specific special editions, Pepsi appears to have a penchant for non-cola colours, as, after its relatively recent bright blue abomination, the beverage behemoth has now worked its way round to white with this creamy Pepsi and yoghurt concoction.

Pepsi White

A potation that Pepsi deserves plenty of praise for, as amazingly it actually tastes as sickly as it sounds. The drink’s slightly thick texture and peculiar taste making it akin to sucking down some slightly watered down shampoo. A pot of Pantene perhaps — only worse.

In the meantime, as you mull over any possible merits it may have, here’s a video of how the standard stuff was sold many moons ago.

Nitchitsu mining town haikyo #1: A visit to the doctors

Situated a good 3 hour drive from western Tokyo, Saitama Prefecture’s Nitchitsu mining town housed around 3,000 people at its peak in 1965, but now, any life is long gone, and the mountain’s iron and zinc remains unmoved.

When things finally wound down, however, many of the town’s inhabitants appear to have travelled lightly, leaving behind a lot of their belongings — the doctor in particular packing only important stuff. So his containers of monstrous,

and probably best left mysterious paraphernalia still remain,

along with all manner,

of medicine.

Surgical instruments too were also seen as secondary,

with rusty,

and wretched looking things,

still randomly scattered about.

As are the ex-residents records.

Meaning that while certain surgical procedures could still be performed, it wouldn’t be particularly pleasant,

although there is still be a comfy-ish bed for convalescence.

In Nitchitsu mining town haikyo #2: A day in the life, I take a look at the way those that were well worked, rested and played, and in Nitchitsu mining town haikyo #3: Home sweet home, a look at their lodgings.

Also, for more haikyo, there are images here of an abandoned house, hospital, cable car station, sports hotel complex, restaurant and love hotel.

Bawdy Tokyo bars?

When it comes to dodgy dens of indecency, the Japanese capital quite literally takes some beating, with more than its fair share of maid made to measure ministrations. But, whereas many places make their particular niche well known — whether it be fatties or even furtive fiddles — one or two are happy to just hint at the noble naughtiness they hold nightly.

Although at the somewhat saucier Super Saloon, the publicised performance (パフォーマンス) may well be based around the participants’ pants rather than any pirouetting prowess.

Tokyo retail reflection

Many shops in the Japanese capital are conveniently situated in the city’s dizzying array of department stores; places where climate control and carefully coiffured cuties are commonplace — compulsory even.

Yet down certain side streets and a bit of the beaten track, outlets with more character, if not exactly customers, can be found. Like this shop specialising in brooms for example.

A store that, perhaps due to a niche that’s not exactly necessary nowadays, unfortunately hasn’t had the pleasure of a patron since 1972 — Saturday, September 2nd, to be precise. And even then the customer in question was after a hand brush that unfortunately they didn’t have.

Japanese used panty purchase?

Sadly, at least for those of a more sordid mindset, the almost mythical used panty vending machine appears to be very much a thing of the past, with rather more mundane merchandise now the main means of making money. A shift that was presumably brought about by a change in the law rather than logistics, as the sale of pungent pants was deemed illegal around half a decade ago.

However, where there’s a will there’s a way, and while this portacabin of porn boldly proclaims its stock of costumes and other collectibles,

a peek inside also reveals it has packs of used panties.

Well, sort of. The only problem being that due to the aforementioned law, they apparently only look like the real thing and, quite surprisingly, have a fragrance of fruit. Mango to be exact. Which, it has to be said, sounds almost unfeasibly fishy.

But regardless of their realism, for the connoisseur after contraband that’s more convincing, there’s still a staggering selection of stuff to choose from,

which, it has to be said, is certainly not to be sniffed at.
