Pearls aplenty

Aimed to coincide with Monday’s Coming-of-age Day, actress Satomi Ishihara has been named ‘Best Pearl Dresser’ among 20-year-olds for 2007. An award in no way designed to blatantly promote a product, but instead to celebrate the beauty of Japanese youth.

Not only that, but the prestigious prize it seems has already boosted Ishihara-san’s popularity, with a long line of fans frantically fumbling for their fit to burst wallets and offering to give the young actress as many pearl necklaces as she wants.

Preposterously priced PlayStation

The surprising availability of the PlayStation 3 in both the U.S. and Japan has been well documented — although they do appear to be selling in Tokyo, albeit at a rather more sedate pace than perhaps predicted.

Yet despite this, and the fact that the new PlayStation is region free for gaming, one optimistic Akihabara outlet has outrageously opted to try and sell an imported PS3 for the truly preposterous price of 128,000 yen (1,082 dollars) — just over double the price of an identical Japanese machine.

Needless to say it remains unsold.

The number of Japanese frequenting game centres would appear to be on the wane, as this particular entertainment establishment has opted to look elsewhere for fresh faces.

Bikini-clad bottom battlers

With sumo’s popularity gradually waning, now is perhaps the perfect time to think about introducing a new, more attractive national sport to the Japanese masses — like bikini bottom wrestling for example.

An activity that cleverly continues sumo’s blink-and-you’ve-missed-it bouts and a distinct lack of clothing, yet at the same time is far more appealing and perky.

Although with its fast-paced action, the regular use of replays to accurately judge the winner would probably be necessary, with slow motion and pause facilities a must.
