Dodgy doc

Whilst a trip to see the doctor can be disconcerting even at the best of times, the arrest of ‘Doctor’ Yamashiro yesterday can only add to potential feelings of uncertainty and apprehension. As after 8 successful years working at around 20 medical institutions, it turns out that the good doctor isn’t a doctor after all.

The 33-year-old fraudster was eventually arrested for prescribing drugs without a licence to a 49-year-old patient. Now whether or not Yamashiro’s diagnosis was correct or not wasn’t disclosed, but hopefully it was, as he is also employed at two other private hospitals in Tokyo. The phoney physician earning a cool 20 million yen (95,000 pound) a year for his services.

It turns out that Yamashiro-san never even attended medical school. In fact his only link to the profession was being hired as a trainee in 1997 by Hiroo General Hospital, although records there show that he failed to participate in any medical procedures whatsoever.

That said, the young chap must have had an excellent bedside manner, as one of the hospitals he has been working at said it hadn’t received a single complaints about the ‘doctor’. An official of the institution deftly washing his hands of the incident by blithely saying that the impostor had been hired through a recruitment agency; therefore his credentials couldn’t be checked.

Such a blasé response being more than a little worrying.

Tranquil time out #7

The Japanese go as mad for the autumnal change in colour as they do for spring’s cherry blossom — almost. Meaning a peaceful day out in ‘the country’ has to be shared by hordes of leaf loving photographers; all happily snapping away, fastidiously filling another album with more red, orange and brown foliage.

Still, despite my rather forced cynicism, it is quite a pretty time of year.

I suppose.

Alien (n)ation

“Hey look, a foreigner!”

Two high school girls giggling and pointing on their way home yesterday.

Were I to receive a report card, my efforts at trying to blend in and go unnoticed whilst pottering about would at best receive a ‘could do better’.

But surely that begs the question: should I really have to?

Rogue radish

It may not be an image of Buddha on a piece of toast, or even a likeness of the consummately coiffured Prime Minister in a blob of hair mousse, but this crane in a watermelon radish must surely be worth a bob or two on eBay.

crane image radish

The unusual discovery was made by Noriko Sasaki in a restaurant she runs in Osaka. The 61-year old explaining that the bird appeared very clearly, with even a hole in the perfect place for its eye.

Needless to say the rare radish garnered a lot of interest from excited diners at the restaurant. Some saying that if Sasaki-san had cut the radish in a different place the image wouldn’t have appeared. Others getting rather carried away, claiming an entirely different image may have revealed itself.

A yen sign perhaps?

Nail related nonsense

Whilst the annual ‘Nail Queen Awards’ may not be the most prestigious prize ceremony in the world, it nevertheless didn’t stop this year’s winners from waxing lyrically about their fingernail fashion.

Becky, pictured above and winner of the television personality category, gushed, “Being chosen as a nail queen was my goal this year. I’m so happy that dream has come true.” Yet just when you thought she had her tongue firmly embedded in her cheek, the 21-year-old showed off her treasure chest themed nails and exclaimed, “I like showy and sparkly things.”

Other winners of the event, sponsored by the Japan Nailist Association, included Aya Ueto. The popular actress giving a more practical reason for her love of coloured nails. “Up until two years ago I had a habit of biting my fingernails, but I overcame that habit after starting nail art.” The picture below amply proving this, her perfectly shaped nails looking especially attractive.

Rather surprisingly, the event also boasted the inclusion of a men’s section, with TM Revolution’s Takanori Nishikawa scooping the top prize.
