Minor league, major mistake

“CLEVELAND — Indians minor leaguer Kazuhito Tadano is asking for forgiveness for what he called a one-time mistake — his appearance in a gay porn video in which he engaged in a homosexual act.”

If a football player in England came out with such a confession, I dread to think what kind of heckling (at the very least) he would have to endure week in and week out.

For Kazuhito Tadano’s sake, I hope baseball’s minor league fans are a little less malicious.

Somehow I doubt it.

An all too familiar political stunt

Japan’s wavy haired Prime Minister obviously felt no shame yesterday in having his picture taken with the nation’s favourite baseballing son, Hideki Matsui. No doubt Koizumi is hoping that some of Matsui’s immense popularity will rub off on him.

But does he really believe that donning a Yankees jacket and smiling at the camera will cause the whole nation to forget that Japanese troops are now stationed in Iraq? Or that people simply won’t see through this transparent stunt?

Having said that, his rumoured game of naked tennis with Anna Kournikova tomorrow could be an altogether different story.

Mildly amusing Japanese-English #3

Beckham hair (pronounced be-ka-mu he-a).

The term was coined during the 2002 World Cup, when David Beckham attained the status of footballing/celebrity deity. In reference to the Holy One’s elegantly coiffured bouffant, anybody with a mohawk since then has been referred to as simply Beckham hair.

Despite Mr. Beckham changing his hairstyle several times since, the expression has stood the test of time. Still being in common use today. Beckham corn-row on the other hand failed to make an impact.

Sumo pictures

The Sumo finished on Sunday, and for the first time in over 6 years, a wrestler went undefeated throughout a 15-day tournament. Quite an achievement. And with the present Yokozuna (and tournament winner) only 23 years old, we are seeing the early days of a potentially great wrestler.

You haven’t got this far have you? Sorry. Here are the pictures.

A fishy story

“I bought my daughter a clownfish because she wanted Nemo. I put it in a bowl filled with tap water and it died soon after.”

Tokyoites and pets it would appear are not the best of bedfellows.
