Used underwear for sale

I saw an interesting discussion program on TV the other night. The panel was made up of a rather disparate group of individuals. Or as the program imaginatively billed them, a ‘generation jungle’.

The main topic of conversation was of the supposedly common practice among schoolgirls of enjo kosai. Or compensated dating to use its English (and rather polite sounding) translation.

Whilst I’m in no way a proponent of such behavior, according to the program, some of the cases are merely innocent dates. Well, innocent for the young girls in question. As they turn up, have dinner, chat a little, and then get compensated handsomely. I guess their companions motives are somewhat less innocent, and heaven knows what goes through their minds, but at least they don’t do anything untoward. Unfortunately not all dates act so chivalrously, and in many cases the young girls unfortunately do have to earn their money. But sadly it has to be said that they enter into such agreements voluntarily, many of them wanting the cash simply to buy new designer/brand goods.

Not surprisingly both the discussion panel and audience wholeheartedly condemned this unsavory activity. The selling of used underwear on the other hand, proved a more, ahem, sticky problem. One of the panel in particular was a vociferous supporter of the practice, claiming she gets at least 5,000 Yen (26 Pound) for each pair. That’s pretty easy money it has to be said. I have to admit, that in the unlikely event that somebody was willing to pay that kind of money for my (for want of a better description) soiled underwear, I’d be more than willing to help out.

Indeed, when it was put to the vote, a quarter of the audience decided that underwear selling, was, by and large, ok. Although which members of the audience voted this way wasn’t disclosed. Having said that, I dare say that it wouldn’t be difficult to work out.

So without further ado, let the bidding commence. How much for these?

So as not to mislead potential buyers, I must say that I am NOT a Japanese schoolgirl. Rather, a 34-year-old British male.

J-pop

2004 will see South Korea completely lift its ban on Japanese pop culture. Allegedly the news has been met with considerable enthusiasm from certain sections of South Korea’s youth, especially those with an ear for J-pop.

I’m not familiar with Korean pop music, but I really don’t see what all the fuss is about, as quite frankly J-pop is rubbish. If I was to say that 90% of it is worthless pap, I think I’d be doing the industry a favour.

To prove my point, the talentless Tube held a concert in Seoul to celebrate.

How’s that for objectivity?

A time for reflection

From the stroke of midnight that brings in the New Year, and well into the first week of January, the Japanese go to pray at a temple of their choosing.

But it’s by no means just praying, as there are numerous stalls selling food and souvenirs, plus omikuji (fortune readings) are eagerly snapped up. You’ll also find the atmosphere to be relaxed and celebratory rather than pious.

But as you can see from the picture below, most of all it’s a time for peace and tranquility. A moment to be spent alone with your thoughts.

Could do better me thinks

The people down at Hakkeijima Sea Paradise in Yokohama must have really been struggling for a New Year event this year. Presumably they discussed it, yet for reasons we will probably never know, they ended up opting for the sea lion-drawing-kanji-for-monkey routine. Indeed, that old chestnut.

Yes, Jonao the sea lion must have really wowed the no doubt humungous crowds as he expertly drew the kanji for monkey. Appropriately enough this year’s animal according to the Chinese zodiac. They thought of everything didn’t they?

As pathetic as this event is, what’s arguably worse is that this bloody sea lion can write kanji better than me.

There must have been some cheating going on. Surely?

Just because I can…

My first post from my mobile. But I’m sending it from home as I need to see if it works.

Is this a sign of how low I’ve sunk?

Sadly, it would appear so.
